Nintendo has unveiled prototype footage of Donkey Kong Bananza running on original Switch hardware, giving fans a fascinating preview of how the game might have appeared before its Switch 2 upgrade. Discover how this early version established Bananza's core gameplay foundations.

Nintendo's recently revealed prototype demonstrates Bananza running on original Switch dev kits. Though now positioned as a Switch 2 flagship title, these early builds showcase remarkably different visuals where textures appear compressed, foliage is sparser, and draw distances are noticeably shorter.
Development reportedly began in 2019 at Nintendo EPD Tokyo with designers experimenting with environmental deformation mechanics. The breakthrough came through an unconventional test: equipping a Goomba with gigantic arms.

"Absolutely, we started with an armed Goomba," chuckled Game Director Wataru Tanaka, recalling the prototype's inspiration from Super Mario Odyssey's Knucklotec boss. "That simple test character could smash terrain, rip apart structures to create weapons, and hurl debris - demonstrating our core gameplay concepts while still running on Switch 1 hardware."

The project's fortunes changed when development transitioned to Switch 2 in 2021, enabling:
These technical advancements transformed terrain deformation from visual spectacle to fundamental gameplay mechanic.

"Switching platforms let us realize environmental density we couldn't achieve before," explained Art Director Daisuke Watanabe. "The increased object placement capacity didn't just improve visuals - it fundamentally enhanced gameplay possibilities."
The final version introduces VoidCo antagonists controlling Banandium Gems while players explore dynamically destructible biomes featuring:

"Continuity drives our design philosophy," Game Director Kazuya Takahashi noted. "Every action creates new opportunities - a ground pound might reveal buried artifacts that lead to hidden chambers, creating this rewarding exploration loop."
Donkey Kong Bananza launches exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 on July 17, 2025. Stay tuned for more updates.
