The iconic Killzone franchise from Sony has been on a long hiatus, but recent comments from its composer, Joris de Man, have reignited hopes among fans for its revival. In an insightful interview with VideoGamer during the PlayStation: The Concert Tour, de Man shared his thoughts on the potential return of the series.
"I know that there have been petitions for it," de Man remarked. "I think it's [tricky] because, I can't speak for Guerrilla or anything... I don't know if it will ever happen. I hope it will because I think it is quite an iconic franchise, but I also think it kind of has to take into account the sensitivities and the shift in, I guess, what people want because it is quite bleak in some ways."
The form in which Killzone could make a comeback remains open to interpretation. De Man suggested that a remastered collection might be more successful than launching an entirely new game, acknowledging the changing tastes of gamers. "I think [a] remastered one would be successful, I don't know if a new game would be as much," he stated. "I don't know if people have moved on from it and want something. I don't know sometimes I get the sense that people want something a bit more casual, a bit more quick."
Killzone games are known for their slower pace and weightier feel, contrasting sharply with fast-paced shooters like Call of Duty. Notably, Killzone 2 received criticism for its input lag on the PlayStation 3, which affected the game's responsiveness. The series is also celebrated for its dark, gritty, and atmospheric visuals and tone.
Despite these unique characteristics, a recent interview with the Washington Post suggested that Sony's Guerrilla Games has shifted its focus away from Killzone towards the Horizon series. It's been over a decade since the release of the last Killzone game, Shadow Fall, yet the desire for its revival persists among a dedicated fanbase. While the future of Killzone remains uncertain, fans can take comfort in knowing they have support from voices like Joris de Man.
