Back in early April, fans of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 were buzzing after spotting mentions of variable refresh rate (VRR) on the system's informational pages. However, those mentions were quickly removed, leaving many to wonder about the feature's status. Now, Nintendo has stepped in to clarify the situation regarding VRR on the Nintendo Switch 2.

In a statement to NintendoLife, Nintendo confirmed that the initial information about VRR was incorrect. "Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only," the company stated. "The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologize for the error." When pressed about potential VRR support for docked mode in future firmware updates, Nintendo responded with a firm, "We have nothing to announce on this topic."

This means that while the Switch 2 will offer VRR as an option when used in handheld mode, those looking to utilize the feature while playing on a TV will be out of luck for now. The clarification comes after a period of confusion, as the original VRR mention was spotted and then swiftly removed. Digital Foundry contributor Oliver Mackenzie documented the gradual disappearance of these mentions across various sites.

While this news may disappoint those hoping for VRR support in docked mode at launch, it's not necessarily the end of the road. Sony previously introduced VRR support to PS5 consoles via a post-launch update, suggesting that Nintendo might follow suit with the Switch 2.

In other Nintendo Switch 2 developments, the company has released a list of games set to receive free performance upgrades, including titles like Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Additionally, Nintendo of America's president, Doug Bowser, has reassured fans that the company will have sufficient Switch 2 units available to meet demand throughout the holiday season.
