Sony has announced the formation of a new PlayStation studio called teamLFG, and they've teased its debut game, which promises to be a unique blend of genres and themes. In a recent PlayStation Blog post, Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business Group, shared that teamLFG originated at Bungie, the developer behind Destiny and Marathon, and is currently working on an "ambitious" incubation project that has him very excited.

The name teamLFG stands for ‘Looking For Group,’ a nod to online gaming terminology, suggesting a strong focus on social gaming. Their first game is described as a team-based action game that draws inspiration from an eclectic mix of genres including fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and what they amusingly refer to as "frog-type games." Players will dive into a lighthearted, comedic world set in a brand-new, mythic, science-fantasy universe.

teamLFG is driven by a mission to foster friendship, community, and belonging through their games. They aim to create an environment where players feel thrilled to log on and see their friends already online, where familiar names become part of the community's lore, and where legendary plays become the stuff of myths and memes. As they put it, “dat’s da good stuff.”

The studio's vision is to build immersive multiplayer worlds that players can learn, play, and master for countless hours. They plan to involve their community in the development process through early access playtests, staying agile enough to respond to player feedback not just before launch but throughout the game's live service, ensuring continuous growth and engagement for years to come.

teamLFG's game is the result of an incubation project that was spun out of Bungie following significant layoffs last year. After Sony's acquisition, Bungie struggled to meet financial targets with Destiny 2, leading to layoffs of approximately 100 employees in November 2023, followed by another round in 2024 affecting 220 more people, or 17% of the studio's workforce. An additional 155 employees were integrated into other parts of Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was during this period that the incubation project was announced.

Last year, a former Bungie lawyer praised Sony's role in making improvements to Destiny 2, highlighting the positive impact of Sony's involvement. Since then, Bungie has fully revealed their extraction shooter, Marathon, and outlined the future roadmap for Destiny 2. They have no plans for Destiny 3 and have canceled a Destiny spinoff called Payback.
