Ghost of Yotei promises unparalleled freedom and expansive maps, setting a new benchmark for Sucker Punch. Dive into the latest details about this highly anticipated game and its rich portrayal of Japanese culture.
In a recent interview with Famitsu on April 24, Sucker Punch unveiled exciting details about Ghost of Yotei, the standalone sequel to the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima. Creative Director Jason Cornell emphasized that this game will offer players the most freedom in gameplay and the largest maps ever crafted by the studio. Players will have the autonomy to discover the locations of the Yotei Six and devise their own strategies to exact vengeance.
Last week, the PS5 release date for Ghost of Yotei was announced, accompanied by a gripping trailer titled "The Onryō’s List." This trailer introduced fans to the protagonist, Atsu, and her quest for vengeance against the Yotei Six.
In addition to expansive exploration, Ghost of Yotei introduces a wider array of melee weapons. Fans speculated about this after viewing the latest trailer, and Creative Director Nate Fox confirmed it in the same interview. Alongside the traditional samurai sword, players can now wield the odachi, chain sickle, double sword, and spear.
Fox highlighted that while the sword remains a central weapon, players can learn to use other weapons from various masters encountered throughout the game's expansive world. Unlike its predecessor, where samurai honor was a key theme, Atsu's non-samurai status allows for a more flexible fighting style. She can adapt on the battlefield, picking up and using weapons dropped by defeated enemies, albeit with certain limitations.
Set in 1603 around Mt. Yotei in Ezo (present-day Hokkaido), Ghost of Yotei offers a backdrop that blends a lawless environment with the natural beauty and inherent dangers of the region. The game will also feature the Ainu culture, indigenous to northern Japan. Sucker Punch conducted extensive research in Hokkaido, visiting museums and consulting with experts to authentically represent this culture.
Cornell was inspired by Hokkaido's stunning landscapes, prompting the team to meticulously recreate this setting for players worldwide to experience. Following the success of Ghost of Tsushima, which was praised for its respectful portrayal of Japanese culture and history, Ghost of Yotei aims to continue this tradition by showcasing the "dangers lurking in the magnificent wilderness of Ezo."
Ghost of Yotei is scheduled to launch exclusively on PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025. Stay updated with the latest news and developments by following our coverage below!
