Pokémon TCG Pocket's trading feature, launched last week, has faced significant player backlash, prompting developer Creatures Inc. to address concerns. In a statement on X/Twitter, Creatures Inc. acknowledged the negative feedback, explaining that the restrictive trading mechanics were intended to prevent abuse, but inadvertently hindered casual enjoyment.
The company promised to address these issues by offering Trade Tokens as rewards in future events. However, the Cresselia ex Drop Event, released February 3rd, failed to include these tokens, contradicting their recent statement.
The trading system's limitations, including Trade Tokens (requiring the deletion of five cards to trade one of equal rarity), and restrictions on trading higher-rarity cards (2-Star and above), have been heavily criticized. Players argue these mechanics are designed to incentivize in-app purchases, hindering the core collecting aspect of the game. The high cost of obtaining Trade Tokens, with only 200 offered as a premium Battle Pass reward ($9.99 monthly subscription), further fuels this criticism.

Creatures Inc. stated that the restrictions were implemented to combat bot activity and multi-account abuse, aiming for a fair playing environment. However, the statement lacked specifics on upcoming changes and compensation for players affected by the current system. The uncertainty regarding refunds or adjustments to existing trades further compounds player frustration. The company's failure to deliver on its promise of Trade Tokens in the recent event has only intensified the negative reaction, with players labeling the system as "predatory," "toxic," and a "monumental failure." The inability to easily trade higher-rarity cards is seen as a deliberate strategy to encourage players to spend more money on packs to complete sets. One player reported spending approximately $1500 to complete the first set. The perceived monetization strategy contrasts sharply with the game's reported $200 million revenue in its first month, before the trading feature was even available.
