A developer involved in Microsoft's now-cancelled Perfect Dark reboot has responded to claims that last year's gameplay demo was "fake," clarifying that the footage represented a vertical slice running "in-engine."

Perfect Dark was among several projects discontinued by Microsoft this week, part of the company's recent significant reductions to Xbox staff and game development. Developed by The Initiative, which Microsoft is now closing, alongside Crystal Dynamics (the studio behind Tomb Raider), Perfect Dark had been seen only occasionally since its initial reveal in 2020.

That changed last year when a "gameplay reveal" video was shown during the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2024. This video subsequently raised questions about how much of its content reflected fully functional, in-game systems.

Earlier this week, Kotaku writer Ethan Gach stated on social media that he had heard the previous year's demo was "basically fake." The authenticity of the gameplay demo was further discussed by former Perfect Dark developer Adam McDonald, currently a senior game designer at Studio MDHR, the creators of Cuphead.

"It actually was running in-engine," McDonald explained. "I was one of three level designers on the project. It performed best if you followed the exact path demonstrated in the video, but it still functioned even with deviations."

"There were some scripted elements," he continued, "and the core gameplay systems shown were polished just enough to appear impressive in the video. We were making genuine design choices to avoid misleading players about the final product. The parkour mechanics were fully functional, and the hacking/deception systems were mostly operational."

"The combat was 'real' in the sense that the actions in the video were performed live, but the scenario was carefully staged to play out exactly as shown and wouldn't handle as smoothly with alternative approaches."

McDonald's comments highlight the nuanced nature of such demonstrations. Like many vertical slices intended to showcase games still in development, it was engineered to function adequately and convey the intended experience of the final product, had development continued.

McDonald's perspective indicates that the team aimed to present a faithful representation of what Perfect Dark would become. Nevertheless, certain elements were clearly still under development, even if they were meant to be indicative of the final vision.

"I'm frustrated by the exaggerated claims that 'THIS WHOLE THING WAS FAKE,' which is why I felt compelled to speak up," McDonald concluded. In a follow-up response, he described it as "a fairly standard vertical slice" and stated, "I don't believe we were particularly deceptive with its presentation."

He added: "It was probably more authentic than many assume. We were solving design challenges on the fly to include features in the demo, doing our utmost not to mislead players. While there were some contrived aspects, much of what was shown was legitimate."

Following the cancellations of Perfect Dark, Rare's long-awaited Everwild, an MMO from Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls Online team, and cuts to other projects, it is anticipated that every game featured at this year's June Xbox Games Showcase will proceed. But what about other titles? We have compiled a list of all major upcoming Xbox games we know of to assess their current status.
